As you arrive at the gated entrance to the Alameda Botanical Gardens, established in 1816 by Lieutenant-Governor Sir George Don, you are met by a grand stone staircase leading up to the gardens. Alternatively, you may take the winding path that runs parallel to the steps which is more suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
The gardens boast several outdoor venues suitable for ceremonies, receptions and events. For an intimate, romantic ceremony, look no further than The Dell. Designed by Giuseppe Codali, the head gardener at the Alameda at the end of the nineteenth century , this Italian, sub-tropical garden is hidden away in the depths of the Alameda Gardens and features exotic plants and flowers, a fountain, a koi fish filled pond and a wooden lattice bridge. The venue itself, perched above the garden can hold up to 15 guests, sitting or standing. Additional guests can watch from the bridge which offers great photo opportunities or then from the garden itself. The garden is available for private and exclusive hire but the public may use the bridge that runs across its centre.
We can provide you with live music in The Dell such as a violinist, classical or flamenco guitarist or full on string quartet. Included in the venue hire are two large sun parasols as it can get pretty hot, the registrar's table and two chairs for the bride and groom. We can dress the table for you if you wish with a tablecloth and floral arrangement. Drinking, eating, smoking is not permitted in The Dell. You may use rice, bird seed or blow bubbles instead of throwing confetti.
It can get very hot during the day so it's always a nice touch to have some chilled drinks to hand or at least some water. Your wedding guests will thank you for it. We can arrange for a post ceremony drinks reception in venues adjacent to The Dell such as Lions Pond, Bandstand or Molly Bloom Circle.
